Umoja Round Table Discussion on Internships

Vol. 20 No. 3

Cleveland State University’s Black Studies Program will host an Umoja Round Table on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at noon in the Howard A. Mims African American Cultural Center in Berkman Hall, Room 137.

The Umoja Round Table hosted by the Black Studies Program offers students an opportunity to lead discussions on current events and topics related to black studies with students, faculty, professionals and members of the community.

The upcoming discussion will be on black studies internships, and four panelists will talk about their experiences and duties during their internships. The panelists are Mikayla Gary, Jackolyn Revier, Julian Rogers and Richard Janus.

Mikayla Gary, a panelist member and Black Student Union secretary, is a sophomore at Cleveland State. Gary is a black studies and communication double major and political science minor, and over the summer she interned at the Urban League of Greater Cleveland.

As an intern, Gary did database work, as well as helped create a community service event for back-to-school season to give out school supplies, uniforms, food and other necessities to nearly 1,000 members of the community.

Gary also had the opportunity to attend the National Urban League Conference where she with many other individuals in her career field.

At the conference, Gary provided her input on how the Urban League can engage more with the community.

To hear more about internship experiences and opportunities as a Black professional or pursuing a career in black studies, attend the upcoming Umoja Round Table even on Wednesday, Nov. 14.
