Keyboard master class with Geoffrey Burleson

The Cleveland Stater Vol. 20 No. 1

Geoffrey Burleson, pianist, recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician and jazz performer, will teach a master class at Cleveland State University on Wednesday, Sept. 19. This class is free and open to the public. All skill levels may attend.

Making his New York City solo recital debut at Merkin Concert Hall in 2000, Burleson has appeared as a concerto soloist with many orchestras and ensembles, including, but not limited to, the Boston Musica Viva, the New England Philharmonic, and the Holland Symphonia in the Netherlands.

According to press releases, The New York Times has acknowledged Burleson as having “vibrant” and “compelling” performances, and by The Washington Post as being a “top-notch pianist”. The Boston Globe has also referred to Burleson’s as being an “outright thrilling” pianist, as well as Fanfare stating that he is “superb.”

Along with his many recognitions, Burleson has been nominated for a 2015 Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year.

Winner of the Silver Medal in the International Piano Recording Competition, and Special Commendations in the Vienna Modern Masters International Performers Competition, the pianist is working on recording the complete piano works of Camille Saint-Saens.

Burleson teaches piano at Princeton University, and is professor of music and director of piano studies at Hunter College of The City University of New York.

The pianist will also perform Frederick Rzewski’s renowned and rarely performed solo piano piece, “The People United Will Never Be Defeated” at Cleveland State’s first concert of the 2018-2019 season on Monday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. in Drinko Hall.

The Cleveland Contemporary Players Artist in Residency Series at CSU, allows Cleveland State to bring in a wide variety of classical and new music composers and ensembles.

Selected composers and ensembles present concerts, teach master classes, workshops, and record and perform student compositions.
